Jacob Abbott [1]

D.D, a Congregational. minister and writer, elder brother of John S. C., Was born at Hallowell, Me., Nov. 14, 1803. He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1820, and at Andover Theological Seminary in 1824. He was (for one year) tutor, and then professor of mathematics in Amherst College (1825-29), and afterwards took charge of Mount Vernon school for girls in Boston. Sept. 18, 1834, he was ordained pastor of a new Congregational Church in Roxbury, Mass., but in 1836 he removed to Farmington, Me., and, devoted himself to literary pursuits. He died at the latter place Oct. 31, 1879. He was the author of a very large number of popular and instructive works, especially for young persons, of which the most decidedly religious was the Young Christian series (N. Y. 1832 sq. 5 vols.).
