Francis Wise [1]

an English clergyman, was born at Oxford in 1695. He was educated at Trinity College, of which he became a fellow in 1718; was assistant to the Bodleian librarian in 1717; afterwards presented to the living of Ellesfield, near Oxford; custos archivorum in 1726; became rector of Rotherfield Greys in 1745; Radcliffe librarian in 1748; and died October 6, 1767. He published, Annales Rerum Gestarum AElfredi Magni (1722): — Epistola ad Joannem Masson de Nummo Abgari Regis (1736): — A Letter to Dr. Mead Concerning some Antiquities in Berkshire, etc. (1738): — History and Chronology of the Fabulous Ages, Considered Particularly with Regard to the Two Ancient Deities, Bacchus and Hercules (1764), and other works.
