Hashabi'ah. (Whom God Regards).

1. A Merarite Levite.  1 Chronicles 6:45.

2. Another Merarite Levite.  1 Chronicles 9:14.

3. The fourth of the six sons of Jeduthun,  1 Chronicles 25:3, who had charge of the twelfth course.  1 Chronicles 25:19. (B.C. 1014).

4. One of the descendants of Hebron, the son of Kohath.  1 Chronicles 26:30.

5. The son of Kemuel, who was prince of the tribe of Levi, in the time of David.  1 Chronicles 27:17. (B.C. 1014).

6. A Levite, one of the "chiefs" of his tribe, who officiated for King Josiah, at his great Passover feast.  2 Chronicles 35:9. (B.C. 623).

7. A Merarite Levite, who accompanied Ezra from Babylon.  Ezra 8:19.

8. One of the chiefs of the priests, who formed part of the same caravan.  Ezra 8:24. (B.C. 536).

9. Ruler of half the circuit or environs of Keilah; he repaired a portion of the wall of Jerusalem, under Nehemiah.  Nehemiah 3:17. (B.C. 446).

10. One of the Levites, who sealed the covenant of reformation after the return from the captivity.  Nehemiah 10:11;  Nehemiah 12:24. Compare  Nehemiah 12:26. (B.C. 446-410).

11. Another Levite, son of Bunni.  Nehemiah 11:15.

12. A Levite, son of Mattaniah.  Nehemiah 11:22.

13. A priest, of the family of Hilkiah, in the days of Joiakim, son of Jeshua.  Nehemiah 12:21.

A Hebronite (  1 Chronicles 26:30 ). 5. The ‘ruler’ of the Levites (  1 Chronicles 27:17 ). 6. A chief of the Levites in the time of Josiah (  2 Chronicles 35:9 ); called in 1E  Esther 1:9 Sabias . 7. One of the Levites who were induced to return under Ezra (  Ezra 8:19 ); called in 1Es 8:48 Asebias . 8. One of the twelve priests entrusted with the holy vessels (  Ezra 8:24 ); called in 1Es 8:54 Assamias . 9. The ‘ruler of half the district of Keilah,’ who helped to repair the wall (  Nehemiah 3:17 ), and sealed the covenant (  Nehemiah 10:11;   Nehemiah 12:24;   Nehemiah 12:26 ). 10. A Levite (  Nehemiah 11:22 ). 11. A priest (  Nehemiah 12:21 ). In all probability these eleven are not all distinct, but we have not sufficient data to enable us to effect the necessary reduction of the list.

(Heb. Chashabyah', חֲשִׁבְיָה [and in  1 Chronicles 25:3;  1 Chronicles 26:20;  2 Chronicles 35:9, the prolonged form Chashabya'hu, חֲשִׁבַיָהוּ ], Regarded by Jehovah; Sept. Ἀσεβί , Ἀσώβ , Ἀσεβίας , Ἀσαβία , etc.), the name of at least nine descendants of Levi.

1. Son of Amaziah and father of Malluch, of the family of Merari ( 1 Chronicles 6:45). B.C. long ante 1014.

2. A son of Jeduthun, appointed by David over the twelfth course of Levitical singers ( 1 Chronicles 25:3;  1 Chronicles 25:19). B.C. 1014. 3. Son of Kemuel, of Hebron, appointed by David at the head of the officers to take charge of the sacred revenue west of the Jordan ( 1 Chronicles 26:30;  1 Chronicles 27:17). B.C. 1014.

4. One of the chief Levites who made voluntary offerings of victims for the renewal of the Temple services under Josiah ( 2 Chronicles 35:9). B.C. 623.

5. Son of Bunni and father of Azrikam, of the family of Merari ( 1 Chronicles 9:14;  Nehemiah 11:15). B.C. considerably ante 440.

6. Son of Mattaniah and father of Bani, Levites ( Nehemiah 11:22). B.C. ante 440. 7. One of the chief priests entrusted by Ezra with the bullion and other valuables for the sacred vessels at Jerusalem ( Ezra 8:24). He is probably the same whose father Hilkiah is mentioned in  Nehemiah 12:21. B.C. 536.

8. A descendant of Merari, who complied with Ezra's summons for persons to perform the proper Levitical functions at Jerusalem ( Ezra 8:19). B.C. 536.

9. A chief of the Levites ( Nehemiah 12:24), "ruler of the half part of Keilah," who repaired part of the walls of Jerusalem ( Nehemiah 3:17), and subscribed the covenant of fidelity to Jehovah ( Nehemiah 10:11). B.C. 446-410.

(4) A H ebronite, chief of a clan of warriors who had charge of West Jordan in the interests of Yahweh and the king of Israel ( 1 Chronicles 26:30 ).

(5) A L evite who was a "ruler" ( 1 Chronicles 27:17 ).

(6) One of the Levite chiefs in the time of Josiah, who gave liberally toward the sacrifices ( 2 Chronicles 35:9 ). In 1 Esdras 1:9 it is "Sabias."

(7) A L evite whom Ezra induced to return from exile with him ( Ezra 8:19 ). 1 Esdras 8:48 has "Asebias."

(8) One of the twelve priests set apart by Ezra to take care of the gold, the silver, and the vessels of the temple on their return from exile ( Ezra 8:24; 1 Esdras 8:54, "'Assamias").

(9) Ruler of half of the district of "Keilah," who helped to repair the walls under Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 3:17 ), and also helped to seal the covenant ( Nehemiah 10:11;  Nehemiah 12:24 ).

(10) A L evite ( Nehemiah 11:22 ).
