Eberhard Van Der Hooght [1]

A distinguished Dutch Orientalist, was born in the latter half of the 17th century. He was a Reformed preacher at Nieuwendam, but spent the greater part of his time in the study of the Oriental languages, especially the Hebrew. He died in 1716. He wrote Janua linguae sanctae (Amst. 1687, 4to; ibid. 1696 [?], 8vo) — Medulla gramm. Hebr. (Amst. 1696, 8vo) — Syntaxis Ebraea, Chald. et Syr. Lex. Nouv Test. Graeco-Latinum, etc. Especially celebrated is his edition of the Biblia Hebraic (Amsterd. and Utrecht, 1705, Oxford 1750, London, 1774, and often; lately again by Tauchnitz.
