BEELTETHMUS . An officer of Artaxerxes residing in Pal., Esther 2:16 Esther 2:16; 1Es 2:25 (LXX [Note: Septuagint.] 1E Esther 2:15; 1E Esther 2:21 ). It is not a proper name, but a title of Rehum, the name immediately preceding it in Ezra 4:8 . It is a corruption of be‘çl te‘çm = ‘lord of judgment,’ and is rendered ‘ chancellor ’ by AV [Note: Authorized Version.] and RV [Note: Revised Version.] in Ezr., ‘story-writer’ in Esther 2:17 Esther 2:17 .

bē -el -teth´mus ( Βεέλτεθμος , Beéltethmos ; Balthemus): One of the officers of King Artaxerxes in Palestine (1 Esdras 2:16, 25). According to Professor Sayce, the name by etymology means "lord of official intelligence" or "postmaster." Rendered "chancellor" in Ezra 4:8 and "story-writer" in 1 Esdras 2:17.

(Βεέλτεθμος v. r. Βεελτεμώθ , Vulg. Balthemus), given as the name of an officer of Artaxerxes residing in Palestine (1 Esdras 2:16; 1 Esdras 2:25); evidently a corruption of בְּעֵל טְעֵם, lord of judgment, A. V. "chancellor;" the title of Rehum, the name immediately before it (Ezra 4:8).
