AGAR . The sons of Agar are mentioned in Bar 3:23; they are called Hagarenes in Psalms 83:6 , and Hagrites in 1 Chronicles 5:19-20  ; 1 Chronicles 27:31 . Their country lay east of Gilead.

mount Sinai, so called, Galatians 4:24-25 . But this reading is doubtful, many MSS. having the verse, "for this Sinai is a mountain of Arabia." Some critics however contend for the reading of the received text, and urge that Agar, which signifies "a rocky mountain," is the Arabic name for Sinai.

<translit> ā´gar </translit> ( Ἄγαρ , <translit> Agar </translit> ). Found once in the Apocrypha in the Greek (Baruch 3:23) probably for the Old Testament Hagar, mother of Ishmael, whose children are mentioned with the merchants of Meran (Midian) and Teman. In 1 Chronicles 5:10 the "Hagarites" the King James Version, are located East of Gilead, and In the days of Saul were at war with the tribe of Reuben. See also 1 Chronicles 5:19 , 1 Chronicles 5:20 and 1 Chronicles 27:31 . In Psalm 83:6 the name of the same people is Hagarenes.
