William W. Atwater [1]

a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born .at Burlington, Vt., Feb. 15, 1814. He experienced conversion in 1832, received license to exhort and preach in 1841, and in 1842 united with the Troy Conference. In 1850 he located in his native town, and for six years followed printing. He published a Vermont Directory and the Vermont Courier, a newspaper. In 1856. he was again admitted into the Conference, and continued to serve in the pastorate until 1871, when, being appointed secretary of the Vermont State. Temperance Society, he retired to Burlington and commenced the publication of the Vermont Witness. He died Aug. 3, 1878. Mr. Atwater was a man of tireless activity; he had a passion for work; was honest, fearless, pronounced, persistent, a champion in the temperance reform.
