East Sea [1]

(with the art. הִיָּם הִקִּדְמֹנַי, ha-yam hak-kadmoni', the forward sea; Sept. ἡ θάλασσα ἡ πρώτη ) is an epithet used in two passages ( Joel 2:20; Ezekiel 47:18) of the DEAD SEA (See Dead Sea) (q.v.), because it lay on the eastern side of the Holy Land. The Mediterranean Sea, because lying in the opposite direction, was on a like account called the West Sea, or the sea on the western border ( Numbers 34:6; Joshua 15:12, etc.). (See Sea).
