A Levitical city, in Manasseh beyond the Jordan, Joshua 21:27 . It is also called Ashtaroth, 1 Chronicles 6:71 , and is perhaps a contraction of Beth-Ashtaroth.

Morrish Bible Dictionary [3]

Levitical city in Manasseh, east of Jordan. Joshua 21:27 . It would appear by comparing 1 Chronicles 6:71 to be the same as ASHTAROTH.

(Heb. Beeshterah', בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָה, prob. house of Astarte; Sept. ἡ Βοσορά v. r. Βεεθαρά; Vulg. Bosra) , one of the two Levitical cities allotted to the sons of Gershom, out of the tribe of Manasseh beyond Jordan ( Joshua 21:27). In the parallel list ( 1 Chronicles 6:71) it appears to be identical with ASHTAROTH (q.v.). In fact, the name is merely a contracted form of Beth-Ashtaroth, the "temple of Ashtoreth" (Gesenius, Thes. p. 196; comp. 175).
