Johann Georg Wermelskirch [1]

a Lutheran minister of Germany, was born February 22, 1803, at Bremen. In 1820 he entered the missionary institution of father Janicke at Berlin, and some time afterwards the seminary of the English missionary society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Jews at Henstead, near Portsmouth. From 1824 to 1835 he labored among the Jews. when he accepted a pastorate of a Lutheran congregation in Posen. Not being a Prussian, he was obliged to leave the country in 1836, and went to Dres den, where he connected himself with the Lutheran. Missionary Society. In 1842 he again returned to Prussia, and in 1844 he became pastor of the Lutheran congregation at Erfurt, and died December 20, 1872. Wermelskirch was very active in behalf of Christian missions, and the Lutheran Missionary Society in Thuringia is the fruit of his labors. (B.P.)
