(Hebrews Karshena', כִּרְשְׁנָא , probably of Persian derivation; comp. mod. Pers. Karshen, "spoiler," or Zend Keresna, Sanscr. Kreshna, "black;" Sept. has but three names, of which the first is Ἀρκεσαῖος ; Vulg. Charsena), the first named of the seven "princes" or chief emirs at the court of Xerxes (Ahasuerus) when Vashti refused to present herself at the royal banquet ( Esther 1:14). B.C. 483.
