Chananja Ben-Teradion [1]
a Jewish teacher of the 2nd century, was one of the ten martyrs who died in the revolt of Bar-Cochba. He was found engaged in the perusal of a roll of the law. To the question how he had ventured to defy the imperial edict, he replied by appealing to the higher duty of unconditional obedience to the laws of his God. Chananja was sentenced to be wrapped in the roll which he had been studying, and thus to be bound to the stake. One of his daughters was the wife of the famous rabbi Meir (q.v.).
