<p> a clergyman of the Church of England, was born at [[Summer]] Hill, near Birmingham, November 6, 1804. He graduated with honors from St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1827; was fellow of: his: college and classical lecturer, 1828-36; assistant master at Harrow, 1830-36; head master of [[Shrewsbury]] School, 1836-66; prebendary of [[Gaia]] Major in.Lichfield Cathedral, 1843-67; select preacher to the University, 1860; rector of West Felton, 1865-67; became regius professor of Greek in the University of Cambridge, and canon of [[Ely]] in 1867, where he continued until his death, April 8, 1889. He was elected a member of the University [[Council]] in 1870, and lady [[Margaret]] preacher for 1873. He was elected honorary fellow of St. John's College in 1880. He was also a member of the New [[Testament]] Revision Committee.
