After five or six years his health failed: he located, studied medicine, and graduated as a physician. He was readmitted into the [[Mississippi]] Conference in 1860, and after a year's successful labor volunteered as a soldier in the Confederate army, receiving the appointment of chaplain. At the fall of Fort Donaldson, he was taken prisoner and carried to Camp Chase, Ohio, where he died, March 4, 1862.
