an eminent English critic and lexicographer, was born at Eton in 1703. He studied first at Eton, then at Cambridge, where he became a fellow of King's College. He was noted, however, not as a theologian, but as a classical scholar. He published valuable editions of Ainsworth's Latin Dictionary and Hedericus's Greek Lexicon, and was the author of Annotations on Locke's Essay on the Human Understanding (1794).
