He graduated from Harvard [[College]] in 1811, and the next year was appointed professor of rhetoric in his alma mater; in 1815 became pastor of the-First Church, Boston; resigned in 1850, but continued to reside there, chiefly thereafter engaged in literary labors, until his death, April 3, 1870. Besides contributions to the periodical press, he published Sermons (1852) and Metrical Pieces (1855-70), including hymns from the German. See Duyckinck, Cyclop. of Amer. Literature, 2:33. </p>
