Louis XIV charged him several times with negotiations, in which he showed a profound knowledge of the affairs of the [[Church]] and of those of the State. D'Estrees obtained the cardinal's hat in 1674. In 1680 he resigned the bishopric of Laon in favor of his nephew, and went to Rome on public affairs.
