<p> a celebrated painter, was born at Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England, February 1, 1801. His parents, who had previously lived in America, returned in 1819, and settled in Philadelphia, where young Cole aapplied himself to wood-engraving. and music. In 1820 he began portrait-painting in Steubenville, and afterwards took up historical painting. In 1825 he removed to New York city, and laid the foundation of his fame by painting scenes among the Catskills. His finest pictures are the four called The [[Voyage]] of Life, which have been engraved. He died at Catskill, N.Y., February 11, 1847. A Memoir of him has been written by [[Reverend]] L.L. [[Noble]] (N.Y. 1855). </p>

Thomas Cole [1]

a Presbyterian minister, was born in Delaware. He spent over two years (1824, 1825) in Princeton Theological Seminary, and was then ordained by the Presbytery of Gallipolis, Ohio. He was in 1830 and 1831 stated supply for a church in New Richmond; labored as missionary in Ohio in 1832 and 1833; was pastor in Augusta, Kentucky, in 1836, for a Congregational Church; agent for the American Bible Society, St. Louis, Missouri, from 1855 until his death, July 18, 1870.
