Immediately thereafter he entered [[Princeton]] Seminary, where he remained one year, and afterwards studied theology under Dr. Hawes. He taught in the [[Deaf]] and [[Dumb]] [[Asylum]] at [[Hartford]] from 1823 to 1831. He was licensed by the North Congregational Association of Hartford, June 1, 1828. He supplied the North Congregational Church at Hartford, the Church at Collinsville also (1831); became pastor at Pittsfield, [[Massachusetts]] (1835-41); and from there he went to the Third Presbyterian Church of Newark, N. J. (until 1853); was pastor subsequently of a Congregational Church at Beloit, Wisconsin, and closed seven years of highly successful labor, January 1, 1861. During nearly the whole time of his pastorate there he gave gratuitous instruction in Beloit College. From there he returned to [[Newark]] in 1864, and commenced labors with a mission of the Third Presbyterian Church, and as a result the Wycliffe Presbyterian Church was formed in 1865, of which he was pastor from 1867 to 1872.
