He graduated at Amherst College, in 1823, studied theology in [[Andover]] Theological Seminary, 1824-27, went, with his wife, as missionary to [[India]] in 1827. In 1844 he took charge of the printing establishment in Bombay, employing at that time one hundred persons. He published several tracts in the Mahratta language, and superintended a revised and corrected edition of the whole [[Scriptures]] in that language. He returned, on account of enfeebled health, to [[America]] in June, 1853, and published in 1856 a "History of India, [[Ancient]] and Modern." He was a member of the "Royal Asiatic Society" and the "American Oriental Society.'" He died in Lowell, July 17, 1863. </p>
