He was reared in the Presbyterian Church, studied at the high-schools in [[Virginia]] and North Carolina, taught school and practiced law a few years, editing likewise a weekly journal; was converted in 1821, and the same year joined the Methodist Church; began to preach, and was admitted to the [[Kentucky]] Conference, in which and in the [[Illinois]] (1832) and the [[Minnesota]] conferences (1857) he occupied prominent appointments, with great efficiency, until 1858, when he became superannuated, and retained that relation until his death, at Jacksonville, Illinois, February 21, 1886. He twice (1833 and 1851) served as president of M'Kendree College, and was often a member of the General Conference. He was a powerful preacher and a genial Christian.
