After graduating from Dartmouth [[College]] in 1846, and [[Andover]] Theological Seminary in 1853, having spent some time in [[Germany]] studying, he was pastor of the Congregational [[Church]] at Yarmouth, Maine, 1854-59; professor of [[Latin]] in Dartmouth College, 1859-66; in Princeton, 1866-69; president of Union College, 1869-71; professor of ethics and apologetics in [[Princeton]] Theological Seminary, 1871-82; professor of Oriental and Old-Testament literature at the same place, from 1882 until his death, February 14, 1892. He translated Zockler's [[Commentary]] on Proverbs (in Schaff's ed. of Lange), and has contributed to various periodicals. He was one of the American revisers of the Old Testament. </p>
