<p> (1): (n.) A loose garment to be worn over other garments; an enveloping robe; a cloak. Hence, figuratively, a covering or concealing envelope. </p> <p> (2): (n.) Same as Mantling. </p> <p> (3): (n.) Any free, outer membrane. </p> <p> (4): (v. i.) To spread over the surface as a covering; to overspread; as, the scum mantled on the pool. </p> <p> (5): (n.) The external fold, or folds, of the soft, exterior membrane of the body of a mollusk. It usually forms a cavity inclosing the gills. See Illusts. of Buccinum, and Byssus. </p> <p> (6): (n.) To cover or envelop, as with a mantle; to cloak; to hide; to disguise. </p> <p> (12): (v. i.) To unfold and spread out the wings, like a mantle; - said of hawks. Also used figuratively. </p> <p> (13): (v. i.) To spread out; - said of wings. </p>

<p> The word ‘mantle’ occurs in the Revised Versionin Hebrews 1:12, replacing ‘vesture’ of the Authorized Version. The passage is a quotation from Psalms 102:26 (27); cf. Psalms 104:6. In both places the Septuagintπεριβόλαιον is a translation of Heb. לְבוּשׁ, ‘clothing.’ The term is appropriate to certain over-garments of ancient peoples, which were literally cast around the body, in contrast to the under-garments, which were put on. <p> 2 Kings 2:14 (c) This is an emblem of authority. Elijah, who was the master of Elisha, left this garment for Elisha, so that all would know that [[Elisha]] now was the successor to Elijah, and could and would exercise all the powers of Elijah. It may be understood as a type of spiritual power conveyed from the greater to the lesser. </p>
