He was admitted into the Iowa [[Conference]] in 1846 (or 1847), and was transferred to the [[Missouri]] Conference in May, 1858. After serving in Jefferson City and St. Louis, he was appointed presiding elder of the [[Kansas]] City District. Persecuted in the war, he escaped with his family into Iowa, where he continued until the next session of the conference, when he was placed in charge of the St. Louis District.
