It still prevails on the plateau of the Andes, from Quito to Santiago del Estero, and in some districts it is exclusively spoken. Before the year 1880 the Quichuans were entirely without the word of God in their vernacular. At the request of the Reverend F.N. Lett, the British and Foreign Bible Society's agent for Buenos Ayres, the gospel of John. was translated by the Reverend J. H. Gibbon-Spilsbury, of the South American Missionary Society, and an edition of one thousand copies was published at the expense of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
