Admitted by the protection of the abb é Boileau, grand-vicar at Sens, in the community of Germain Gillot, he learned there Latin. Greek, and the elements of Hebrew. He was sufficiently proficient in the latter language to be able to help father Thomassin in his Glossoire. He obtained a situation as tutor at the [[College]] Mazarin, and in 1712 was appointed theologist of the chapter of Sens. He had been a member of the Academie des [[Inscriptions]] since 1706.
