| <p> Fleming, [[Alexander]] ( 2), D.D. </p> <p> a Scotch clergyman, graduated at [[Glasgow]] Univetsity; was licensed to preach January 20, 1801; elected by the parishioners to the living at Neilston, Paisley, in June, and ordained September 27, 1804. The parishioners, in 1826, refused to take the sittings by auction, which led to protracted litigation, ending in an appeal to the House of Lords in April 1834. The assembly publicly thanked Mr. Fleming, in 1833, for his zeal, labors, and great exertions in the cause. The want of increased accommodation being felt in many other places gave rise to the appointment of a committee of the assembly in May 1828, for Church accommodation, which merged in May 1835, into that of the committee for Church extension, and has led to the erection of more than one hundred and fifty additional churches and parishes. Dr. Fleming died June 10, 1845, aged seventy-four years. His publications were numerous, and treated chiefly of Church matters in controversy at the time, one of which related to the building and endowing of churches.
