<p> an English divine was born in 1726. He was educated at Queen's College, [[Cambridge]] where he took the degree of LL.B. in 1751. At the time of his death, June 6, 1796, he was vicar of Dulverton. His parents, who had previously lived in America, returned in 1819, and settled in Philadelphia, where young Cole aapplied himself to wood-engraving. and music. In 1820 he began portrait-painting in Steubenville, and afterwards took up historical painting. In 1825 he removed to New York city, and laid the foundation of his fame by painting scenes among the Catskills. His finest pictures are the four called The [[Voyage]] of Life, which have been engraved. He died at Catskill, N.Y., February 11, 1847. A Memoir of him has been written by [[Reverend]] L.L. a celebrated painter, was born at Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England, February 1, 1801. His parents, who had previously lived in America, returned in 1819, and settled in Philadelphia, where young Cole aapplied himself to wood-engraving. and music. In 1820 he began portrait-painting in Steubenville, and afterwards took up historical painting. In 1825 he removed to New York city, and laid the foundation of his fame by painting scenes among the Catskills. His finest pictures are the four called The Voyage of Life, which have been engraved. He died at Catskill, N.Y., February 11, 1847. A Memoir of him has been written by Reverend L.L. Noble (N.Y. 1855).
