After attendance at the high-school of Salem, and the Latin school in the same place, he graduated from Harvard College in 1836, immediately after which he became a teacher in an academy at Charlestown, Virginia, for one year. In 1837 he went to [[Washington]] city and taught a select classical school for more than a year, connecting himself with the Protestant Episcopal Church in February 1839. [[Leaving]] Washington the following April, he entered the middle class of the Theological Seminary of Virginia; and in October 1840, was ordained deacon.
