After being educated for the medical profession, he spent two years in the army as surgeon during the Revolutionary War, and then settled as a physician in Rockland Co., New York. Becoming impressed with the belief that it was his duty to preach the Gospel, he was ordained August 2, 1786; and after being for a while a missionary on the Hudson, became pastor of the Baptist church at Hillsdale and Hudson.
