(Heb. with the art., hash-Shen, הִשֵּׁ , The Tooth Sept. ἡ παλαι ¡ α Vulg. Sen ), a place mentioned only in Samuel 7:12, defining the spot at which Samuel set up the stone Ebenezer to commemorate the rout of the Philistines. The pursuit had extended to "below Bethcar," and the stone was erected "between the Mizpah and between the Shen." The Targum has Shinna. The Peshito-Syriac and Arabic versions render both Bethcar and Shen by Beit- Jasan, evidently following the Sept., which appears to have read ישׁ Yashan, i.e. old. The name indicates not a village, but merely a sharp rock or conspicuous crag in the vicinity, like Seneh ( 1 Samuel 14:4). (See Ebenezer).

shen ( ההשׁן , ha - shēn , "the tooth" or "peak"; τῆς παλαιᾶς , tḗs palaiás ): A place named only in 1 Samuel 7:12 to indicate the position of the stone set up by Samuel in connection with the victory over the Philistines, "between Mizpah and Shen." The Septuagint evidently reads yāshān , "old." Probably we should here read yeshānāh , as in 2 Chronicles 13:19 (OHL, under the word). Then it may be represented by ‛Ain Sı̄nia , to the North of Beitı̄n .
