In 1851 he was ordained to the work of the ministry, and for a time was pastor of the Richland Church. For many years he was moderator of the [[Ebenezer]] Association, also a trustee of Mercer University, and a member of the Executive Committee of the [[Georgia]] Baptist Convention.
