He was tutor in the university two years after his graduation, carrying on at the same time his theological studies under Dr. Wayland. In 1836 he was ordained pastor of the Baptist [[Church]] in Haverhill, Mass., where he had a successful ministry of twenty-three years. He was elected professor of sacred rhetoric and pastoral duties in the Newton Theological Institute in 1859, and held the office for seven years. In 1866 he accepted a call to the pastorate of the Baptist Church in Framingham, where he remained until his death, Jan. 2, 1872.
