He became pastor, serving various places until 1844, when he became secretary of the Irish Mission, and in 1849 one of the secretaries of the Baptist Missionary Society, acting in that capacity for twenty-one years. He was again in the pastorate for the next twelve years. In 1880 he became president of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland. He died November 4, 1890.
