He enjoyed the training and counsel of earnest, devoted [[Christian]] parents, spent the most of the early part of his life in teaching, studied theology privately; was duly licensed by the St. Lawrence Association in 1852, commenced his labors at Redford, N.Y., and was ordained by a Congregational [[Council]] in 1854. In June 1860, he became pastor of the [[Church]] at Au Sable Forks, N.Y., which post he filled with marked fidelity, until he was constrained to enter the service of the United States, and received a captain's commission in 1862.
