While serving as lieutenant of artillery he made a religious profession, and went to the Theological Seminary at Princeton, where he graduated in 1844. In that year he was licensed and ordained as missionary to China; He labored, together with Bridgeman, for several years in preparing a revised translation of the [[Scriptures]] in Chinese; and wrote [[Darkness]] in the Flowery Land, or [[Religious]] Notions and Popular Superstitions in North [[China]] (N.Y. 1857, 12mo).
