Clemency (Or Mercy)
was deified by the Greeks, and had an altar in Athens, erected by the kindred of Hercules; and a temple dedicated to her by order of the Roman senate, after the death of Julius Caesar, on some of whose denarii this goddess appears. The poets describe her as the guardian of the world, and picture her as holding a branch of laurel, or olive, and appear to show that gentleness and pity ought principally to distinguish .victorious Warriors.
