He received a careful religious training; was led to [[Christ]] at the age of fourteen; licensed to exhort at twenty-four, to preach at twenty- eight, and at the age of forty received ordination as deacon. - His services as local preacher were abundant and successful, and continued till 1856, when he joined the New [[Jersey]] Conference. In 1860 his failing health obliged him to become superannuated, and he retired to his farm in [[Cumberland]] County, where he died of cholera, Oct. 3, 1866. Mr. Chew was an excellent preacher, and brought many into the Church. See Minutes of Annual Conferences, 1867, p. 45. </p>
