He was converted at the age of seventeen; received license to preach in 1856; in 1857 was admitted into the New [[Jersey]] Conference, and, on being appointed to Swartswood, was from that time a member of the [[Newark]] Conference. Though his early educational advantages were very limited, he became an able and acceptable preacher, from his lifelong studious habits. He died March 3, 1872. Mr. Carmichael was a man of sterling qualities of mind and heart, methodical, skilful, faithful, devoted, and successful. See Minutes of Annual, Conferences, 1872, p. 35. </p>
