<p> an English Independent minister and journalist, was born at [[Portsmouth]] in 1809. He was educated at the Dissenters' [[College]] at Wymondley, Herts, and served for three years an Independent congregation at Ware, and afterwards one at Leicester. In 1841 he went to London, and established the Nonconformist, a paper in the interests of religious equality, becoming proprietor and editor, a position which he continued to occupy until his death, April 30, 1881. He was several times a representative in Parliament, and wrote numerous works on political and ecclesiastical subjects. </p>
