<p> a minister of the Methodist Protestant Church, was born in 1807. He was an honored member of the Muskingum Conference, and was one of the best known of his denomination in Ohio; a strong preacher, had good executive ability, and wherever he was stationed the [[Church]] prospered. For some years he was chaplain of the Ohio Penitentiary. He died at Cadiz, September 12, 1883. See The Methodist Recorder, September 22, 1883. </p>

Politician and Socialist, born at Vauxhall, of humble parentage; bred to be an engineer; imbibed socialistic ideas from a fellow-workman, a Frenchman, a refugee of the Commune from Paris; became a platform orator in the interest of Socialism, and popular among the working class; got into trouble in consequence; was four times elected member of the London County Council for Battersea; and has been twice over chosen to represent that constituency in Parliament; b . 1858.
