a Roman Catholic monk, was born October 14, 1849, in Newark, N.J. He was educated at St. Mary's Academy and St. Vincent's College, in Pennsylvania, then went to the American College at Rome, and from there to the Jesuit University at Innspruck. He returned to America in 1875, and became professor of theology in St. Vincent's College, and in 1880 prefect. In 1885 he was elected abbot of the Order of St. Benedict, with headquarters at Newark.
