<p> father of Johann Dietrich, was born December 13, 1679, at Wertheim, in Franconia. He studied at Greifswalde, and, after completing his course, travelled extensively through [[Holland]] and England. With the large material which he had collected in [[England]] he went to Frankfort, with the view of preparing a new edition of the Ethiopic grammar, published by Ludolph, his former teacher, in 1702. In 1704 he accepted a call to [[Hamburg]] as professor of Oriental languages, and in 1712 was made first pastor of St. Nicolai. He died October 24, 1738. Besides his Ethiopic grammar, which he edited in a second edition, he published a number of sermons, for which see Doring, Die gelehrten Theologen Deutschlands, 4:742. (B.P.) </p>
