He was consecrated bishop of Abila (in partibus) by Pius IX, September 25,1864, and appointed vicar-apostolic of the eastern district of Scotland. On the restoration of the hierarchy by Leo XIII, in March 1878, he was translated to the archiepiscopal see of St. Andrews and Edinburgh. He died July 2, 1883.
