Entering the monastic life as a Lazarist, he was sent to the United States as missionary, and for a time preached in Missouri. In 1842 he was made bishop of Claudiopolis, and vicar apostolic of Texas; was transferred to [[Galveston]] in 1847, to New [[Orleans]] in 1861, and, finally, was made archbishop of that diocese.
