He early exhibited an intense fondness for learning, and, though he had to struggle against adverse influences, managed to secure a good primary education; his final preparation for college was received in the Donaldson [[Academy]] in Fayetteville, N. C., where he discharged the twofold duties of teacher and pupil until 1835, when he entered the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with the first honor. He studied theology in the Union Seminary at Prince Edward, Va., was licensed in 1845, and ordained and installed pastor of Carthage, Union, and [[Cypress]] churches in North Carolina. In 1852 he accepted a call to the pastorate of Centre [[Ridge]] Church, Ala., which relation existed until his death, Oct. 14,1860.
