<p> a distinguished missionary of the American [[Baptist]] Missionary Union, was born at West Wardsborough, Vermont, February 8, 1825. When quite young he was sent to the academy at West Townsend, and while there determined to enter the [[Christian]] ministry. His college and theological studies were pursued at Madison University, Hamilton, N.Y., where he graduated in 1853. He was ordained at West Wardsborough, October 8 of the same year, and, with his wife, Lucy Ann (St. John), embarked for China. and arrived in June 1854, at Ningpo, where, with singular earnestness and marked success, he labored for' nearly twenty years. He died there, September 10, 1874. Among the qualities which made him a model missionary were his remarkable singleness of purpose, his persistency in active labor, and his gentle bearing towards the people. See Amer. Bapt. Miss.
