He was early trained in religious work, especially as a speaker in the temperance cause; in 1857 became pastor at Islington, in 1862 at Brighton, in 1873 at [[Islington]] again, in 1877 at Manchester, in 1881 at [[Falcon]] Square, Lond., and died June 12, 1885. He visited [[America]] in 1880. He was an eloquent speaker, and wrote over sixty volumes of a popular character. See (Lond.) Cong. Year-book, 1886, page 178. </p>
