( Γεργεσηνός ), a reading ( Γεργεσηνῶν ) found in the Received Text (with many fragmentary uncial and other MSS.) in the account of the expulsion of the swine by our Lord ( Matthew 8:28), instead of Gadarene ( Γαδαρηνῶν, as Tischendorf, with several of the earliest and many later MSS.), or [[Gerasene]] ( Γερασηνῶν, so Lachm. with most of the cursive MSS. and several versions), or even Gazarene ( Γαζαρηνῶν , so the [[Codex]] Sinaiticus). In the parallel passages ( Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26) the readings are different, but equally disputed (R.T. Γαδαρηνῶν, with by far the greatest weight of authority; Lachm. and Tisch. Γερασηνῶν , with אּ [in Mark only, in Luke Γεργεσηνῶν, B, etc.). It is evident that the evangelists did not write the same name; and we may therefore suppose that the exact spot was one on the immediate lake shore, within the bounds of the region indifferently known by either of the general names [[Gadara]] or Gerasa; or if "Gergesenes" be retained, it may refer to the ancient territory of the [[Girgashites]] (q.v.), in the same neighborhood. (See [[Gerasene]]).
