He entered the ministry, and obtained, while quite young, the abbey of Bourgueil-en-Vallee, which he represented as deputy to the Estates- general of 1614. In 1620 he succeeded his cousin Philippe Hurault in the see of Chartres, and in 1647 was transferred to the archbishopric of Rheims. He signalized himself in the assembly of the clergy of 1636 by maintaining the royal authority.
